The Japanese National Honor Society (JNHS) works to recognize and encourage
scholastic achievement and excellent in Japanese study, unite with teachers
and administrators in developing and maintaining high standards of Japanese
language education, and promote altruistic conduct through various activities.
The JNHS sponsor schools are recognized and announced in the Oshirase newsletter
that goes out to all Japanese teachers around the nation. JNHS students receive
certificates of excellence and letters of appreciation from the JNHS Director
and the NCJLT (National Council of Japanese Language Teachers).
Several times each school year, members volunteer around district 196 schools
to teach local elementary and middle school students about Japanese language
and culture. A few are also invited to teach middle school students through
Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji for a two-night, three-day language
camp in the fall. Within Eastview, members tutor Japanese 1 and 2 students
who need help beyond what is provided in the classroom. They are expected to
go above the norm and help out in their community whenever needed.
Each year, JNHS members are also encouraged to participate in the Minnesota
State Japan Bowl Competition held in early spring. Teams compete against students
from other high schools around the state who study Japanese. Eastview teams have had remarkable success at the state level, the regional level (Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin) and at the national level.
