What's Happening in Physical Education?

Goal of Physical Fitness
The ultimate goal of the Deerwood Physical Education program is to create a learning environment that instills, promotes, and motivates students to personally value a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Students in all day kindergarten and grades 1 through 5 have structured Physical Education classes for 25 minutes two out of every four cycle days. They all meet with Mrs. Fischer, the Physical Education Specialist at Deerwood. Each lesson includes approximately 5 minutes of fitness and skill development followed up by 20 minutes of game activity in which students can apply the skill taught on that particular day. Students in Kindergarten classes see their homeroom teachers for instruction 25 minutes every Friday. Each student has the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of planned activities in an active and safe environment. These activities provide skill development, help students to be successful, develop a positive self concept, and are enjoyable. Students start out learning the Basic Skills of moving, throwing, catching, kicking, and striking. They then progress through the grades into more specific sport skills, concepts, strategies and lifetime activities. Every student has the opportunity to develop skills at his or her own pace. They are also encouraged to understand the "hows" and "whys" of each. All lessons and activities are success-oriented with the emphasis on self improvement and having fun. Mrs. Fischer's goal is for all students to become moving, thinking, and feeling individuals who will take part in active and healthy lifestyles throughout their lives. [Return to top of page]

Physical Fitness is Important
All Deerwood students in grades 1 - 5 participate in a district-wide personal fitness assessment every fall and spring. Students are checked in the areas of abdominal strength, upper body strength and endurance, flexibility of the lower back and hamstrings, and cardio-respiratory endurance. Through the charting of their scores, the student will strive for healthy scores in each of the areas of fitness. The emphasis of the fitness assessment is for each student to maintain or improve his/her level of physical fitness. District-wide norms for each item of the assessment have been compiled and are sent home in the fall and the spring with the student's progress reports. The norms provide information in regard to each child's level of fitness in relationship to other students in the district. [Return to top of page]

Physical Education Attire
Tennis shoes must be worn for ALL Physical Education classes. Shoes must have laces in them or velcro shut. Please be certain the tennis shoes have non-marking soles. Dress in comfortable clothes. Anticipate the weather outside. We try to go out as much as possible during the fall and spring. If you are wearing a dress or skirt, shorts should be worn underneath to avoid any uncomfortable situations. [Return to top of page]

Medical Excuses
Parental excuses must be given to the school nurse at the start of each day. They will then be given to the P.E. Specialist before classes begin on that day. Let your child know if you want them to be excused from P.E. class. Excuses for more than 1 week should have a Doctor's note accompanying them. Should your child's activity be limited or restricted in anyway, please inform the school nurse, P.E. teacher, and the classroom teacher. Examples might be asthma, allergies, broken bones, etc. [Return to top of page]

Parents are Encouraged to...
Take an active role in your child's personal fitness and wellness. Plan physical activities involving the entire family. Encourage your child to practice skills and share information learned in Physical Education class. [Return to top of page]

Project Playfit "Games Day" --- Friday, September 18, 2009 --- 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Games Day is a day for students and staff to learn many new games in one day! Parent volunteers will teach games to students, teachers, and clerks on a rotating basis through stations. (Parents volunteers will be provided with rules and equipment for their station before the event starts.) It's a great way to start off the new year by letting students learn how to cooperate together as a class. This year's theme is character education. [Return to top of page]
