ART CONCEPTS
Art at Deerwood integrates 4 essential concepts into each lesson:
Creative Expression
Students explore art in a variety of media. They learn to develop and apply design concepts to expressive and imaginative themes. They relate art to everyday life. Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas for artwork, to refine them and use media expressively.
Art History
Students explore the artistic traditions of Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. Artistic achievements of men, women and ethnic groups past and present, are represented. The role of art in everyday life is examined at every grade through lessons on art in the community, careers in art and art in business.
Art Criticism
Students learn the processes of perceiving, analyzing, interpreting and judging their own and other's art. The ability to make informed judgments about art requires critical thinking skills as well as knowledge about art.
Aesthetic Perception
Students use their senses, knowledge and feelings to find beauty and meaning in their environment and in works of art. Lessons at every level heighten student's awareness of variations in lines, colors, textures and other visual elements.
ART ADVENTURE PROGRAM
Deerwood Elementary School has an Art Adventure Program for all students. The program is taught by trained Deerwood volunteers. They present art masterpiece reproductions from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts to our students. The goal of the program is to introduce students to a few of the quality works of art available locally, while making the students more comfortable as they learn to observe and analyze art.
