AREAS of FOCUS in May

Language Arts

  • Reading Workshop: Students are reading non-fiction books and learning to ask higher-level questions about the text. The students will continue to take turns doing book talks. Please help your student prepare for their book talk when it is their turn. The date of their book talk should be listed in their planner.
  • Writing Workshop: The students will be writing poetry. They will also be making one of their narrative stories into a book.
  • Word Study: Students are working on the pattern lists for spelling. They will continue with the routine of spelling tests on Thursdays.

Math

  • Students are working on a graphing unit. They will be practicing division and will have a weekly division quiz. Please help your student practice the basic facts.

Social Studies

We have finished our Global Village unit. Students learned about what life is like for a child in another country. They all made puppets and did a puppet show to help the other students learn about the country they researched.

Science

  • Students are studying water. They will learn about the water cycle, properties of water and water conservation. As part of this unit students will be walking to the DP pond to make observations and develop an experiment.
