General Practice: Guidelines for keeping your child home
Many parents are frequently concerned about when students should stay home from school because of an illness. The following information is intended to help with this decision. Please inform the school nurse/office of any communicable diseases your child may be experiencing. We will then alert other students in that class by sending home a note.
Please follow the guidelines listed below regarding illnesses:
• Temperature should be normal (100.0) 24 hours BEFORE returning to school.
• If your child has vomited during the night or in the morning, keep them home that day. Keep home for 24 hours AFTER last vomiting episode.
• Your child should remain at home for 24 hours AFTER the last episode of diarrhea.
• Any rash, of which you do not know the cause, should be checked by your child's pediatrician BEFORE sending to school.
• Please keep your child home while you wait for throat culture results.
• Notify the School Nurse if your child develops a communicable disease.
The single most effective thing you can do to prevent the spread of disease is to wash your hands thoroughly and often!
Medication Policy:
We encourage, when at all possible, that medications be given at home. If medications are needed during school hours please call the school nurse to make arrangements. Medications must be in the original labeled container. Parents must provide written permission to the School Nurse in order for the child to receive medication while at school. A physician's written authorization is REQUIRED for any prescription medication that will be given for longer than a 2 week interval.
Please call everyday your child will be absent from school. This helps us ensure your child's safety and whereabouts.
