Sophia Kickhofel has been recognized by Carnegie Hall as one of the finest saxophonists in the country following her selection to the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. A sophomore at Apple Valley High School, Sophia is only one of two alto saxophonists chosen to be a member of this prestigious ensemble.
Members of the orchestra are between 16 and 19 years old and were chosen after a comprehensive and highly selective audition process. As part of her selection, Sophia will attend a four-week jazz program that includes a residency at Purchase College, SUNY, where students will work with Jazz Artistic Director Sean Jonesand an all-star faculty. Together they will perform on the famed Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall with special guest Kurt Elling.
Later this summer, Sophia and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra will take their show on a tour of Asia, performing in Taipei, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. The program is tuition-free program and covers all student expenses.
