The District 196 School Board approved calendars for the next two school years at its Oct. 8 meeting. The approved calendars are the same as versions that were initially presented to the board Sept. 24.

Both calendars are similar to the current school year, with 171 days of school for middle school and high school students, and 169 days for elementary students. The two-day difference is to provide time for each elementary student to attend an individual literacy assessment with their teacher in late August. Also in both calendars, school begins the Tuesday after Labor Day and spring break is the last full week of March.

The biggest change is elimination of the MEA break in October in the 2020-21 school year. Director of Human Resources Tom Pederstuen said the administration conferred with leadership from Dakota County United Educators, which represents the district’s teachers, and agreed the district should schedule students to be in school on these days due to uncertainty about the future of the MEA teachers’ conference.
