Bonding Through Generations

The program called Bonding Through Generations is a nine-month intergenerational pilot program here at Black Hawk Middle School. The program brings in older adults (60+) from the community in to Black Hawk to work with 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.  Each student will be paired with one older adult.  These two generations will work together to complete community service projects such as writing letters to soldiers in Iraq, making dog bones for the Humane Society, creating ornaments for elders in a nursing home etc…  The program will take place almost every Tuesday night from 3:10-4:50, the entire school year.

Math League

The first math league practice is at 3:10 on Monday, September 29th in house 3T room 1 and is open to interested 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Bring a calculator and a pencil. See Mr. Jaques in 3T if you have any questions.

Our first meet is after school on Monday, October 6th at South St. Paul. If you cannot attend the first practice but want to participate, ask your math teacher for a schedule and permission form that will need to be completed and returned to Mr. Jaques in 3T by Friday, Oct 3rd, prior to our first meet.

Written permission is required to take the bus to our away meets. A practice and meet schedule is listed on the permission form. Practices conclude at 4:45. Activity buses are available Tuesday through Thursday, so when we practice on a Monday, which is often the case, students will need to arrange for a ride home.

In math league students compete in teams against other schools. Some of the problems are completed individually, and some as a team. Problems are typically much more advanced than what we will see in the school curriculum, but we practice the problem types prior to the meets. Teamsare comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. We'll have 5 meets this year. The last meet is early in January.

Kids in the Community Club

Black Hawk’s first organizational meeting of the Kids in the Community Club will meet on Tuesday, October 7 after school in Ms. Sorensen’s room in 2C.  Our first meeting will run from 3:05-4:00 so you will need to make arrangements to be picked up at the lower level doors.  However, for most of the meetings you will be able to take the activity bus home.

This club will focus on ways 6th, 7th, and 8th students from Black Hawk can be part of the community by working to make it a better place for all of us.  It will include working with Community Action Council as well as other organizations on projects that benefit others.  In addition, we will continue making tie-blankets and other craft items to be delivered to various organizations.

If you are interested, but unable to come to the first meeting, please see Ms. Sorensen and fill out an interest form.
