At Apple Valley, we are fortunate to have professional musicians teaching private lessons to our students on almost every instrument. Each of these musicians has significant experience performing and teaching. They teach on site, for a fee, after school hours.

Carol Gilkey teaches flute lessons at AVHS, Mondays-Thursdays beginning at 2:30PM. Ms. Gilkey, adjunct instructor at Normandale Community College, is an active flute teacher in the Twin Cities. She is the first director of flute choirs in the Twin Cities, arranges and publishes flute choir music and flute technique books. She has taught in the public school on Long Island NY, DOD schools and U of Maryland in Okinawa and MacPhail. She has presented several times at the National Flute Convention. Degrees earned include a MM at Manhattan School of Music and BM at DePauw University.

Joyce Carlson-Rioux teaches bassoon lessons at AVHS on Tuesdays beginning at 3:30PM. Ms. Carlson-Rioux has taught bassoon privately for over ten years. She completed a B.A. in music at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Her private teachers include Matthew Ruggiero (now retired) of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, as well as John Miller (Principal Bassoon) and Mark Kelley (Co-principal Bassoon) both of the Minnesota Orchestra. Ms. Carlson-Rioux performs with the Courante Winds, a reed trio, and is the principal bassoon of the St. Paul Civic Symphony. She has also appeared with other local groups including the Metropolitan Symphony and the Rochester Symphony.

Dr. Nina Olsen teaches clarinet lessons at AVHS on Mondays beginning at 3:30PM. She holds a DMA in clarinet performance and has been teaching private clarinet lessons for all age levels since 1982. She is a senior lecturer in clarinet at Carleton College, and has served as adjunct faculty in clarinet at St. Olaf College and St. Cloud State University. Dr. Olsen has been a member of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra since 1990.

Joan Hutton teaches saxophone and clarinet lessons at AVHS on Thursdays beginning at 2:30PM. Ms. Hutton has been a private sax and clarinet instructor for over 14 years. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in music education and performance from Ithaca College and a Master’s degree in performance from the Eastman School of Music. She is a member of the Ancia Saxophone Quartet (www.anciaquartet.com), the jazz-funk sextet Rare Medium, and has performed woodwinds on numerous shows at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater and other local theaters. She also teaches at Augsburg College.

Bill Simenson teaches trumpet at AVHS on Thursdays beginning at 2:30PM. Mr. Simenson has been teaching and freelancing in the Twin Cities since 1983. He has performed in a wide variety of styles and with such groups as the Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra, Latin Sounds Orchestra, at Mixed Blood and Guthrie Theaters, as well as with other groups and his own ensembles. Member of: International Trumpet Guild, American Composers Forum, American Federation of Musicians. Awards include: Bush Foundation Fellowship in Music Composition, Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant.

Kim teaches horn because she has a real passion for encouraging student horn players and seeing them develop their skills.

John Tranter teaches low brass at AVHS on Wednesdays-Fridays beginning at 2:30PM. Mr. Tranter is currently an Adjunct Professor of Trombone and Euphonium at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. In addition to being a regular performer with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Mr. Tranter has also performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, Minnesota Opera, JazzMN Big Band, on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" and numerous touring Broadway shows and local theatre productions. At the national level, Mr. Tranter is also a highly active recitalist and clinician, and has presented many solo performances and workshops at festivals and universities in the United States, Europe and the Pacific Rim.

Paul Budde teaches private low brass lessons at his Farmington home on Saturdays. Mr. Budde also teaches tuba and euphonium at Gustavus Adolphus College. He is the founder and chairperson of Tubonium, an annual international euphonium and tuba workshop, bringing in guest artists and attendees from around the world to the state of Minnesota (see www.houseoflowaire.com for more information). Mr. Budde has a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, a Masters Degree in Music Performance from the University of Minnesota, and currently is working on his PhD in Music Education, also from the University of Minnesota.

Reid Kennedy teaches percussion lessons at AVHS on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning at 2:30PM. Mr. Kennedy is a percussionist, composer, and arranger currently involved with the Twin Cities music scene. He is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in music education. His expertise focuses on all areas of percussion: snare, mallets, timpani, and drumset.
