Curricular Instrumental Music - Marching Band

Marching Band

Marching Band is an integral part of the Instrumental Music curriculum at Apple Valley High School. With few exceptions, all band students in grades 10 thru 12 participate in Marching Band each fall. An enormous amount of preparation and planning goes into our fall marching program. Since plans are made with a specific student group in mind, each individual is essential to the success of every Marching Band performance and rehearsal. Therefore, attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required unless exceptions are requested in writing and agreed upon in advance.

The following points outline our expectations:

  1. All wind and percussion players must supply two items to supplement the marching band uniform supplied by the school.
    • Black performance shoes are worn with black socks by each member of the band for every performance. These shoes are purchased through the band program. Each fall during rehearsals, sizes will be available to try and orders will be taken so each student will have their shoes in time for the first performance of the season.
    • AVHS Marching Band t-shirts are worn for the Fourth of July parade and under our uniform jackets in the fall. Wearing these t-shirts under our uniform jackets allows us to remove the jackets if it is hot and still retain a uniform look. Opportunities to order t-shirts are provided each spring and fall. Order forms are available in the band room and are also sent home with our spring and fall newsletters.
  2. It is our expectation that all returning 10-12 grade instrumental music students will perform with the band at the APPLE VALLEY FREEDOM DAYS PARADE on July 4th. This is the largest single performance audience that we will have all year. It is important to demonstrate the quality of our instrumental music program and support our community. Performing at the parade is a special tradition for Apple Valley High School. The first Marching Band at the school made their debut performance in the parade and our Marching Bands have performed in each Fourth of July parade since then.

The Fourth of July uniform will be khaki shorts, tennis shoes, white socks, and the official Apple Valley Marching Band T-Shirt. The parade is a category B lettering event and qualifies for nearly one fourth of a band letter for the following school year. Any student unable to participate in the 4th of July parade must provide written notification to the Marching Band Director prior to the last day of school.
  3. All Marching Band practices in August before school begins are essential to the success of Marching Band. Ninety percent of our field show will be taught during these rehearsals before school begins. Rehearsal times are specific and students will be excused at or before the end time. Absent students without an excused absence will receive a call from our parent volunteers each day that they are absent from rehearsal.

Written notification is required before school ends in the spring if you have a schedule conflict with any practice or performance on our fall schedule. We have adapted this August schedule to reduce and or eliminate conflicts with AVHS co-curricular athletic practices and or activities. As per AVHS policy, a performance/game in one activity takes precedence over a practice in another. A practice in an activity takes precedence over a meeting or social event in another activity. We try very hard to work through conflicts far in advance so it is essential that you notify us of any potential conflicts.
  4. All wind and percussion players must have an instrument specific lyre and flip folder. (The lyre holds the flip folder and the flip folder holds the music.) Lyres and flip folders can be purchased in the band room. The cost is $5 for the lyre and $5 for the flip-folder
