Athletic Band
All ninth thru twelfth grade band students are invited to participate in Athletic Band. The Athletic Band performs for selected sporting events at AVHS, providing a great outlet for music making in a very relaxed and energized setting. The purpose of Athletic Band is to help foster a sense of school pride and excitement at sporting events.
Performances: During the fall sports season, the Athletic Band will perform at one regular season game for boys and girls soccer and one girls volleyball game. During the winter sports season, the Athletic Band will perform at one regular season game for boys and girls hockey and one regular season game for boys and girls basketball. The band will follow these teams during tournament games beginning at the section finals through the state tournament. Click here for the 2005 Fall Athletic Band Schedule. In the event that a team is eliminated from tournament play, the remainder of the Athletic Band performances for that sport will be cancelled. Athletic Band members must be willing to commit to the rehearsal and performance (playoff) schedule of the present season. In this way, the Athletic Band will be consistent in instrumentation and quality from performance to performance. Students may choose to participate in Athletic Band for either fall or winter season, or for both.
Membership: Members of the Athletic Band are required to attend all rehearsals and performances the chosen season. The dates of these rehearsals along with a calendar of performances will be available to students before each sports season begins. Click here for the 2005 Fall Athletic Band Schedule. It is important that all members check their personal and family schedules for potential conflicts. "Work" is not a reason for missing rehearsals or performances. Any absence from performances must be preceded or immediately followed by a written note from the student?s parent. Any unexcused absences from rehearsals or performances will result in a loss of letter credit.
Letter Credit: Students fulfilling the attendance and performance commitment of a season?s Athletic Band will receive a ?Category B? letter credit towards lettering in band for each season they participate. Tardiness, lack of preparation, lack of cooperation, and absence can result in loss of letter credit. Any questions should be addressed to Mr. Rinear.
Lyres and Flip Folders: Athletic band members will need a lyre and flip folder (same as those used for marching band). The combined cost of a lyre and flip folder is $10, and they can be purchased prior to the first rehearsal. Each student must have their own music, lyre and flip folder at all rehearsals and performances.
Athletic Band Jacket: Minnesota State High School League regulations require that all athletic bands at tournament games be dressed in uniform. Students who have returned a signed and completed Commitment Form (distributed at school) will be issued an Athletic Band jacket to wear for the tournament season. This jacket is loaned to members in good faith, is required for all tournament performances, and must be returned in good condition following the final performance of the Athletic Band. Students will be charged the $75 replacement cost for a lost or damaged jacket.
Commitment Form: All members of the Athletic Band must complete and return a Commitment Form to reserve a place in the band and confirm any previously known conflicts with rehearsals and/or performances. Forms will be distributed early in the fall and winter sports seasons.
Questions: Any questions about Athletic Band should be addressed to Mr. Rinear. He can be contacted at 952-431-8330 or by email: jeffrey.rinear@district196.org
