Student Resource Links for the Library

Iindependent School District 196 completely remodeled and expanded the Thomas Lake Library during the spring and summer of 2006. A library instructional area was added. This space had been made into a second computer lab for the emphasis Thomas Lake has made for student computer instruction. This technology emphasis along with library skills allows the media specialist to work with all first throught fifith grade students for one fifty minute period every three days. During that time each student also has the opportunity book selection and checkout. Each grade level has a specific curriculum for libary skills and technology. The Thomas Lake library, including the resource room boasts of more than 39,000 items.

The ibrary skills curriculum provides for instruction of student research using both print and online resources. Our own school district resources provide student access (both at school and at home) to the following resources:
• Grolier Online which includes three general encyclopedias (New book of Knowledge, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, and Encyclopedia Americanna. In addition, our Grolier subscription also includes three reference series: Lands and People, Popular Science, and America the Beautiful.
• SIRS Discoverer is a general reference resource for young students which provides full text articles and images from magazines, newspapers, and government documents.
• TeachingBooks.net which provides original profiles of authors and illustrators, guides to books, and links to resources on children's and young adult literature.
• netTrekker has many educator selected resources, such as lesson plans, learning activities, periodicals, and newspapers that teachers and parents may find helpful.
The Minnesota Legislature has provided funding for online resources for all libraries in the state. Their funding has provided the Gale Group of databases for elementary schools which includes Kid's Infotrak and Kids Info Bits, a curriculum-related, age appropriate, full-text content from the best elementary reference sources and magazines
