District 196 English Language Learner Program
Welcome to the Independent School District 196 English Language Learner (ELL) Web pages. Here you will find useful information about our ELL program that will be helpful to parents, teachers, students, and others.
Program Description
The ELL Program in District 196 supports learners in acquiring the English they need in order to succeed in the classroom and beyond, in accordance with the State of Minnesota Guidelines and English Language Proficiency Standards. Teachers who are fully certified in teaching English as a Second a Language work with ELL students at all elementary, middle and high schools in the district. New students are tested for English proficiency when entering District 196 schools, as well as periodically throughout the school year to determine progress and eligibility for continued instruction.
In District 196 ELL settings, students receive instruction in English. Students are grouped by proficiency level and may or may not share the same native language.
Learning English Through Content
The ELL program in District 196 develops English skills in reading, writing, and speaking, as well as the language of academic content. The ELL staff is trained in the same best literacy practices as classroom teachers. ELL instruction is aligned to grade level curriculum.
