ROSEMOUNT, Minn. -- George Beran of Greenleaf Elementary School was selected to receive the 2011 Elementary School Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award by the Minnesota chapter of the Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AHPERD).

The state-level award is given to one elementary physical education teacher each year who demonstrates exemplary teaching abilities. Beran will receive the award during the Minnesota AHPERD conference Oct. 7-8 in Minneapolis.

"I enjoy the enthusiasm, energy and positive attitudes students bring to physical education class," said Beran, who has taught at Greenleaf since 1993. "The opportunity to teach students the importance of living an active and healthy lifestyle, and how it impacts them for a lifetime is a very rewarding experience. I feel privileged to teach in a community that believes in the importance of educating children and validating the value that physical education has on the overall education of students."

Greenleaf Elementary Principal Michelle deKam Palmieri said, "It is the powerful combination of George's relationships with his students and his natural, engaging teaching abilities that allows for his students' high achievements."
